Daughter's first deer

Post by Dan20703 »

My 13 year old got her first deer. Free-hand shot at 50 yards with a .243 (lung hit)
We were still hunting our way back to the truck at the end of the day and this deer happened along.
After the shot I asked if the gun kicked much and she said she didn't remember a thing about the shot.
I'm a proud Daddy!

Nice Job ~ I'm 31 and just got the opportunity to take my first deer last weekend ~ I wish my father had hunted when I was young and started me early.

Congrats to you and your daughter.. I like seeing young kids being brought up to hunt, girls even more so..... My Niece shot her first deer 2 yrs ago, which would have made her 13 at the time too, and her first time to ever hunt.. It was a 7 point White-Tail, a 120 yard shot with a .243. I was a bit worried about the gun, since I had only sighted it in for 75 yards, I tried to get her to take the shot with my 30.06, but she refused.. She got a kill shot, but not a quick kill shot. I hate to take a animal if it's not a very quick death, so I pulled up a few minutes later as it laid on the ground and took a shot.. It was a tough shot though, but I understand her not wanting to shoot my 30.06. I was very proud of her, she hesitated a bit, took a while before she took the shot, but my first time was like that too.. She helped field dress it, she would have done it by herself, but it was dark, about 25 degree's outside and snowing, not the best conditions to learn to field dress in..

The 7mm-08 (140 gr bullet in a 8.0 lb rifle) generates about 12.6 lb ft or recoil (but is negated by the decelerator).

The 30.06 (assuming a 150 gr bullet in an 8.0 lb rifle ) churns up 17.6 lb ft of recoil...and is generally too much for inexperienced shooters IMO.
Can you elaborate on those figures, and how they were arrived at?

I'm no physics guy, but I understand "equal and opposite reaction": muzzle energy and butt energy are the same, but the latter is dampened by the mass of the rifle (and the geometry of the recoil motion).

This is why Hollywood has it wrong: a shotgun that blows someone 10 feet through the air on the receiving end, would also blow someone 10 feet through the air on the shooting end. Equal energy, but in opposite directions.
