Technology has improved to the point where the wireless service antenna for notebooks and desktops is now a USB plug-in device.

Under a roof, reception is diminished as measured by the bars on a cellphone, say in my case from three bars to two. Two bars is slow, slow, slow with 2G.

How far away can the antenna be tethered visa USB cable without a noticeable degradation in signal?

Not sure if you want to spend the $$ or not, but there are cell signal booster for inside the house. I think Fry's Electronics have them in their phone/cellular section.

Be very sure that it supports data though, there may be some limitations on the type of traffic it will boost. Also, make sure if it doesn't work you can return it. I have heard mixed reviews on whether those really help or not.

As for using a USB cable, just getting it up away from the laptop and your body will make a big difference. 5 -10 ft can do that for you, and they will work fine with that length.
