Time for something nice.

Thirty six years ago tonight I met Ms. Anygun.

It happened in Baytown.

I was working with her older brother (now deceased) at a TV shop. We also spent our off time together mostly at the Dickinson drag strip wrenching on a friend's digger or playing 9-ball and doing what young men do. I was in Lee College with a 4.0 waiting to be drafted to 'Nam. My birthday was #2.

Mrs. Anygun was a nursing student also at Lee College.

Thanksgiving eve we had never met. Ronnie said she knew of me from church. My dad was a deacon and she always sat behind us. (He eventually performed our wedding)

We picked her up at her Aunt's house in Old Baytown. I will never forget the long brown hair and those piercing green eyes. I am seldom at a loss for words but I stammered when I asked if I could call.

We went out on our first date a week later. It truly was love at first sight.

We were supoposed to meet in Dickinson Thanksgiving evening but I grenaded my Camaro's rear end that night out racing on Tri-City Beach Rd. I hole shot a 1964 SS Impala off the line but 3/4 of the way the rear end almost locked and stalled me. Dad was annoyed so he made me stay home so I could pull the rear end.

I hate Chevy 12 bolt rear ends. I realized why the Ford guys liked those 9-inch units.

Our 34th wedding anniversary is in January.

We celebrate Thanksgiving eve more than the actual wedding date because thart is when the story starts.

36 years and she still gets to me.....

Congratulations man, that's great. My wife and I have been married 20 years and we still hold hands when we go out together. The youngsters don't know what to make of that.

It's a special time of year for us, too. We met on 7/28/2001. (In defense of my Man Card, I can recall the exact date because it would have been the 13th anniversary of my first marriage, which ended in 1998.)

I popped the question on 11/24/2001, after we'd been to my mother's for a belated Thanksgiving (it was the first time she met my family -- they "passed", as did she!) (Again, in defense of my Man Card, I had to look up the date of "that Saturday after Thanksgiving".)

She hadn't been to that part of Arkansas before, so I took her on a scenic drive up Rich Mountain, and stopped at an overlook to enjoy the view. "Will you marry me?" kind of slipped out, but she immediately said "Yes!"

I surprised myself more than her, so I wasn't prepared with a ring. We continued on up the mountain to Queen Wilhelmina State Park, where the gift shop had some gag rings on sale, twofer$0.99; her engagement ring, which she showed off like it was the Hope Diamond, was a huge chunk of Lucite with an embedded smiley face.

It was a whirlwind romance; from the last weekend of July, we saw each other every weekend (we lived 80 miles apart). Before the middle of August we knew we were in love; before October we both knew we'd get married, even though we hadn't discussed it yet. By the time I actually asked, we both knew I was going to propose, we just didn't know when.

The engagement was short, too: we married February 14, 2002, 6-1/2 months after we met. John David was born November 15 (that's nine months and one day, if you're counting!), and life is wonderful as we approach our 7th anniversary.

Seven years -- but there are no itches that we can't help each other scratch.

And....yeah, you should have been running a 9". First, it probably would not have broken (assuming you were under 450 hp) and second...even if it did... you could just pull the axles, pluck the third member, throw a new one in and only be an hour late for your date! YOU KNOW THAT!

Yes, I knew what was in store. I had swapped rears before. That was Dad's point too. He really hated my street racing. No one back then was open for me to even hunt one down. Thanksgiving turkey just didn't taste as good that evening.
