I'm heading up to Colorado soon for a vacation and I'd like to know if anyone out there can give me some general information on carrying with a Texas CHL in another state, specifically Colorado. I'm not looking for any specifics here, just general guidelines. I'm assuming I'd be carrying under Colorado's CCW laws, or would it be the Texas CHL laws? Is Colorado an open carry state, and if so can I with a Texas CHL open carry there? Anything general like that before I contact a sheriff down there for details would help.

As long as you're a Texas resident, it looks like you'll be fine.

I believe you have to obide by their CCW laws while in their state(that would make sense to me).

As far as open carry, I'm not sure, I didn't do that much homework to dig up what i've provided so far.

You do have to have a resident Texas license (Colorado does not recognize non-resident licenses, like Utah. You WILL have to abide by the concealed weapons laws in Colorado. You have to do this in any state you travel to. Texas laws only cover Texas.

Talked to the Sheriff who told me with my resident Texas CHL I can carry concealed or open-carry as I wish, basically along the guidelines of Texas laws. Gave me a website to go to to read up on specifics. Only thing I'm worried about now is carrying any of my pistols around up there where the air seems to have a lot of moisture in it(ruined my digital camera last year). Any suggestions?

But seriously, if you're worried about moisture, I'd recommend unloading it first, then wiping it down each night with a gun rag that has a little of your favorite gun oil on it. You can easily prep a rag before you leave, then put it in a zip lock bag to seal it when in your luggage.

Dburke87 - This is the first I have heard about rusting guns. A friend of mine used to live in Colorado Springs and he said that because of the altitude, the snow never melted. It sublimed. It seems like this would make the air drier and rust would be less likely.

Early this year there was a thread about static electricity and lint in Colorado. I don't think the mystery was ever solved. I don't know what's going on up there. If you are concerned, take a stainless handgun if you have one.

You ARE being facetious about the moisture, aren't you?? The humidity there is MUCH less than here. I was stationed up there for several years and lived there for a bit off and on. You can go out in 50 degree weather wearing shorts and be comfortable because of the low humidity. Yes the static is worse, women don't have as many bad hair days, your skin dries out and don't be surprised if you get a bloody nose during some winters.

No place like home though.

Problem with coldweather even in dry climates like Colorado is bringing stuff in and out of the cold will get condensation. real rough on Cameras. Snow also tends to get into everything.

I was in the Colorado Springs area for a week last summer, and I had no issues with rust or condensation affecting any of my guns. That said, I regularly wipe down my guns, and maintain them, but it never even occurred to me it could be a problem. As for concealed carry, the only time I disarmed while there was the day we went to visit the Air Force Academy. Have fun and stay safe!

I grew up outside Denver and spent Summers on the Western Slope at relatives. Never had problems with firearms that regular cleaning did not address.

As far as i can see churches are not off limits to a permit holder unless marked for no weapons. One note, Denver has tougher restrictions on weapons and you need to see their info on what is banned (link is in the .pdf file)

Mrs. Oldgringo and I are blessed to be able to spend our summers in Hinsdale County, CO which is the most remote county in the contiguous 48 per AAA. I understand that CO is an open carry state as well as a TX CHL reciprocating state. We check in with the local sheriff (great guy) once we get the RV opened up and let him know we're here for the summer. Last summer he was tickled to see our CHL's and went so far as to say his goal was to get everyone in his county licensed. I've only seen one instance of open carry there (other than LEO) and that is by an older Colorado resident who can't talk about anything without the word "kill" coming up in every other sentence. We refer to him as "Machine Gun Mxxxxx", among other things.

I'm anxious to get back on our ATV and hit the high country again - after a little warming and thawing.
