I would think the Tx burglaries could be linked to Mexico's problems with gun influx.
Florida however has a real problem with gangsters sticking up tourists, for quite a few years now.

They're worried about all of the NFL players being around guns after the Plaxico incident.

Florida + any tourist thing = uber Floridian paranoia.
