A man walking his dog in Terrell on Wednesday shot and critically wounded an armed 17-year-old robber, police said.

Update: He's dead Jim.

They even got the "victim" part right, too.

Fatally would have been better, but critically will just have to work-thug. Must need to practice for engaging mutliple targets.

I always read the public comments posted after a story like this to keep up with the "logic" used by the anti gun/anti self defense types. In this case (from the version of this story in the Dallas Morning News), I found one for my file of classics. I suspect it's satire, but there are a lot of replies from people who are taking it seriously.

This is another lesson on keeping your carry weapon with you...at all times. I always carry when I go outside to walk my dog. My sister though me to be a little strange and I am still trying to explain to her that you will never know when the attack will come...just be ready.

Don't know what the deal was last night in Terrell. In that story in the Terrell Tribune they mention two other armed robberies in Terrell happening around that same time.

This one hit close to home for me, the park where the shooting took place is just a few blocks away from my house.

I hate to throw a wet blanket, guys, but ...

Walking your dog is great exercise for both of you.

Walking your dog at 10:20 p.m. in a park is an unnecessary risk.

In my opinion, the defender in this case was very lucky to survive. Criminals do not always give you a chance to draw and take an aimed shot.

His name will eventually be put into the public record, and he may receive grief about the incident. People will know where lives that he may wish do not know.

Just to be clear, any honest citizen should be able to go anywhere at any time without fear of criminal attack. We don't live in Utopia, and we should plan accordingly.

I can't say this is the case, since we don't know the victim's demographics -- but there is an apartment complex that backs up to that park. People might wonder what he as doing that time of the night, but I can see how it would be feasible he'd could have been walking the dog before bedtime. It really is practically that apartment complex's back yard.

The dog doesn't need a walk at that time of night. He may need to be taken down to the lamppost.

I understand that people work hours other than 9 to 5. I do. But whatever hours you work, you can find less risky times to do what you want to do, and avoid unnecessary risks.

I understand, yesterday's events have probaby opened a lot of eyes in our quiet little community.

I heard on the radio tonight that the one who was shot has died. His accomplice was arrested when he came to the hospital to check on his friend.

Well, technically, the dog doesn't need a walk at all. You can just take his tags off, toss his butt outside, and let animal control deal with him while you cower in your home at all times because you can't possibly risk going outside.

Or, you could just decide that since you're paying taxes on all those public places 24/7, you have a right to use them, and (maybe with the sudden revelation that criminals can strike anytime, day or night) simply be prepared to deal with whatever happens while you're using them, whenever you want to.

I was reading some of the comments on the Dallas News article. Some of them were really stupid and annoyed me. Had to stop reading it before it start to make me angry.

There's a spectrum between paranoia and avoiding unnecessary risks.

Please consider that every police officer killed in the line of duty had more training, equipment, and real-life experience than the majority of non-LEO citizens.
