Pocket Clip Knife = Probably Carrying?

Many of us, maybe the majority, with CHL's seem to carry a pocket clip knife as back-up. I know every time I see someone with a pocket clip knife, I really look them over to see if I can detect where "it's" hidden.

So, I wonder if this type knife carry is well known among the general populace and if so, is such a knife a give away signal that we're carrying?

I don't think it's any kind of indication. Many people I know carry a knife and do not carry a handgun. You are more likely to have the need for a knife [as a tool] than a gun.

I carried a 3" pocket clip knife for years before getting my CHL. I just seemed to need one every day, so it became a standard thing along with keys, wallet, and phone. They come in handy for those ridiculously tough plastic packages that everything seems to come in now.

I've carried a pocket knife pretty much daily for almost 50 years now. It's been a clip type knife for the past 20 or so of those years. I've had my CHL in hand for almost 11 months now. I don't think the observed presence of a clip knife in the pocket is a reliable indicator of whether or not someone is packing heat.

The percentage of Texans with CHLs is approximately 1.5%-2% of the population. The percentage of Texans with a pocket knife is probably equal to the number of Texans with a Y chromosome. The percentage of those with a clip type knife is probably equal to the percentage of those old enough to start shaving.

+1 Annoyed Man's response.

This is a common logical fallacy among Americans (because we don't teach logic in public school). Unfortunately this kind of logical fallacy finds its way into virtually every part of our lives and IMHO is extremely hazardous to our society on many levels (don't get me started, it's a different topic's rant).

if X, then Y != if Y, then X

Even if most people who carry a gun also carry a clip knife, it does not mean that most people who have a clip knife also carry a gun.

I see so many pocket knives its recockulous, and I know for a fact that each and every one of those people (well, except for the retired LEO I had contact with that one time, couple years ago) were not armed with a HandGun.

now, if they had a flashlight with'em, OC (not open carry) dispensor, and a spare mag....

:iagree:

Things are different now, but most teen-aged boys of my generation carried some type of pocket/pen knife daily. In fact...it was common for a teacher (female) to borrow a knife from a student to open a package, etc. This would get you expelled from school today.

I do notice quite a few people with clip type knives, but I do not generally associate that with Concealed Carry.

I wish I was the guy who held the patent on putting a clip on a pocket knife! I remember that it seems like, back in the late 1970s only cops, firemen, and paramedics carried clip knives. I don't recall ever seeing one before then. I saw my first one when I was working in an ER around 1979 or so. I think I bought my first one probably in the mid-1980s. Prior to that, I had always had a folding Buck knife, or something like it, in my front pocket.

Alright, I'm convinced.

Sheesh! (chuckle)

I developed my view as 90% of those who I know that carry, also carry a clip type knife. Right there for all the world to see...or left, depending...

Probably 90% of those who carry wear a belt, too.

Yep, and 100% of them are human beings, live on earth, etc...

If you can see the clip they are probably carrying a knife.

...and, although I too carried a pocket knife (or two) for years, before Concealed Carry was the law, it sort of does make sense that people who carry tools in order to be prepared might carry a pistol - just another one of those tools.
