I reload for .45 acp, .38 Spec., 9mm luger and .380 acp and have a couple or three pounds, if not more, of Green Dot and 700-X powder left over from my trap and skeet shooting days. The powders are still good because I've been loading and shooting them. These may not be every/any/nobody's first choice for handgun powders but they are what I have.

Does anyone have any proven reloads for the above calibers or could suggest sources for information on these powders in conjunction with the above calibers? I'm not entering any matches but I do want the gun to go bang when called upon.

I do not have any experience with Green Dot but I have an Alliant Reloader's Guide issued in 2000 and it has Green Dot load data for all the calibers you mentioned. If you cannot find what you need on Alliant's Web site let me know bullet weights on the calibers you are interested in and I will post the info for you.

No help with the 700-X, but I find that 4.5 grains Green Dot under a 200 grain lead semi-wadcutter in .45 ACP is a mild load that prints well and does cycle the action of my 1911.

Also, for "light" magnum loads in .357 mag for short barreled revolvers, 6.5 grains Green Dot and a 125 grain jacketed bullet give me about the same velocity (1150 fps) as factory rounds (Remington Golden Saber - a mild load for a factory load) in the short barrel, without the shock, noise, and drama. A similar load might work in .38 special, but it would be worth checking and starting significantly lower.

I think Green Dot is an underrated powder and I find it works well in 45acp and 38spl, but data isn't as easy to find as for newer powders.

I shot 4.8 grains of 700-X and 5.2 Grains of Green Dot yesterday behind a 127 gr. 9mm lead bullet in both my XD 9 SC and my Browning Hi-Power. I can definitely cut back on those loads!

! was given a S&W 64 over Christmas and it is a shooter . I'll load up some .38's with the Green Dot and see what happens.

For anyone interested the following is from Alliant's Reloading Guide, 2000 Edition.

Listed loads are MAX loads. Recommend you start below these numbers and work up:

Green Dot charges
9mm
95 gr FMJ - 5.5 gr
115 gr FMJ - 4.7 gr
125 FMJ - 5.2 gr
147 gr XTP - 3.7 gr

The 115 load info is not a typo on my part. It shows 4.7 for the 115 and 5.2 for the 125. Data from different time periods? Who knows.

230 gr JHP - 5.4 gr
230 gr Lead - 4.3 gr
200 gr JHP - 5.9 gr
185 gr JHP - 6.8 gr

I started using 700-X when I was buying it in 12-lb kegs to reload shotshells when I was shooting a lot of trap & skeet.

230 cast RN 4.8 grains 700-X 833 ft/sec from a 5" 1911

9mmP

115 gr FMJ 4.5 grains 700-x 1142 ft/sec from a BHP

100 gr JHP 5.3 grains 700-X 1297 ft/sec from a BHP
