Review: UTG Brass Catcher for AR15

A while back, my son and I purchased a couple of UTG brass catchers for AR15 rifles from Midway, for $7.99 each. They cost a couple of bucks more today, but given what they do for people who want to save and reload their .223/5.56 brass, even $10 is a cheap price.

Here is a picture of what they look like:

There is a velcro loop that goes around the handguard where it meets the upper receiver. The opening of the top of the sack shaped catcher encloses the ejection port. Brass ejects directly into the sack, where it accumulates until you unzip the bottom of the bag and empty it out.

I only have one niggling little complaint, but it is not a barrier to effectively using this device, and that is that the net of the sack is made of nylon, and the freshly ejected brass is so hot that it can burn the nylon a bit and stinks a little. Other than that, it does exactly what it advertises, and for a very reasonable price.

A word of caution for left handed shooters on right handed ARs (like me) . . . . . . keep the zipper on the bottom of the bag closed while shooting. A week ago, I forgot to close the bag. A freshly ejected case dropped right out the bottom of the bag onto the table, just as I laid my right forearm right down on top of it. It practically sizzled. A week later, the mark is still on my arm. And this is the second time I've done this to myself, which doesn't say much in my favor! .223 brass ejects much hotter than larger calibers, it seems.

Anyway, I highly recommend this UTG brass catcher from Midway.

(I changed the thread title to avoid further confusion. This item is not for sale, this is a product review.

Thanks for the update, just got one, have not had a chance to use it. Will remember to keep the zipper closed. Good advice for life in general :coolgleamA:

Pretty neat catcher. Getting branded like that,, well it's cheaper than a NRA tattoo. ;-)

If the ejected brass is hot enough to melt the nylon I would be concerned about its suitability for reloading. Once that stuff sticks to the brass it will require lots of effort to remove, not just tumbling in a polisher (remember there is a difference between cleaning and polishing) and if not cleaned off the brass it could lead to all kinds of problems as it deposits in the chamber.

Same thing for pieces of burned on skin. :evil2:

I have used mine extensivly and have not had an issue with the nylon melting. I have had to adjust after shooting a 30 round mag through it, but it still caught all of the brass. I am about to try it with my .22 conversion kit.

YMMV.

I am assuming to keep from having to pick up the 22 brass, right ? There is no reloading a .22 since it's rimfre.. right ?

Correct.

I can go through 200 to 400 rounds of .22 in an afternoon. Do that a few times and the property owner (I do odd jobs for access to his land) would get pretty peeved after a few trips. His kids do not pick up any of the brass. I have pointed out that I police up 95%+ of my brass so as not to get on his bad side.

I cannot afford to shoot the .223 200 to 400 times 2 or 3 times a month.

IS this "catcher" new in box/wrap or used?

save that 22lr brass and reuse it in reloads as a jacket or base,
or sell it to a scrapper for extra "shooting/gun money".
you can also garner favor with the wife if you sell it and give it to her, gas will soon be high again and brass will bring a premium!

Sorry to disappoint Flint. . . I'm not a cigarette smoker. OTH, if you've got a couple of Cohiba's and want to share with me, I'll be glad to pass some time with you on a porch somewhere with those cigars.

Yeah I figured as much, I was joking of course.

I do not use tobacco products in any capacity....so we'll have to find some other reason to sit on a porch (maybe a bible study or something).
