Question on liability insurance

Hey all, Im new here (obviously) and I am currently processing with DPS for my CHL instructor certification. I am working on putting together a list of things I need to have done before I teach the very first course and one of the biggies is liability insurance. I have a few questions:
1. What is a good amount of coverage to get?
2. Who is a reputable insurance agency to do business with?
3. Have you, or do you know of someone who has had an experience that involved using their insurance?
A range here in San Antonio (Bracken) told me that to use their facilities, I would be required to produce $5 million in coverage. Is this normal?
Thanks for any information or guidance you can provide.
Steve

I don't know about the $5mm at the range (???) but I have a $1mm liability along with the various other coverages we have with State Farm. The liability coverage is less than $200 per year and actually lowers the insurance costs on the house, vehicles, boat and RV's. Check it out with your insurance agent.

Thats great news because I actually have State Farm and a great agent. I called him this afternoon about this issue but unfortunately he didnt know much about it and/or whether or not they could cover me. He said that worst case scenario, they would point me in the right direction. Ive got my house and truck with them so hopefully I can do this too. Can you tell me what the insurance you have is called? Is it just personal liability?

Yes, I reckon that's what it's called. State Farm knows because they send me an annual bill for <$200.
I think you might oughta' think about gettin' you another State Farm agent if yours doesn't know his business. Our insurance agent's knowledge and support is why we have a real live agent instead of a dot.com insurance company, IMO.

Very true. Ive been with this guy for years and he has always done me right. I think the question just threw him a little and he questioned me as to what exactly, would be the atmosphere, activities etc. I expect him to be able to help me out, but if he cannot, Ill be going with someone else for this issue.
Thanks for your help!

You may want to look into NRA Professional Liability insurance. Their web site is sometimes pretty difficult to navigate, but I'm pretty sure it's there. But maybe not with $5 mil limit - whoa! - you may need to look for another range ...

Yep, it looks like Ill be going with the NRA insurance. With respect to Oldgringo, I had a long talk with my insurance rep and he tried very hard to get to the bottom of whether or not State Farm would be able to cover me and his words were something to the affect of; "theres no way that State Farm would underwrite the liability of any event where handguns were being used"
Thanks
EDIT: I went to the NRA site and found it right off the bat. Here is the Instructor Plus details:
Instructor Plus Plan
The Instructor Plus Plan is for instructors who want professional liability coverage in addition to general liability. The coverage is broader and is a Commercial General Liability Insurance policy and acts as primary coverage.
What Is Covered
Coverage for bodily injury and/or property damage caused while acting as an instructor during the lesson.
Medical expenses up to $5,000
Property damage
Legal expenses
Professional Liability Coverage (Covers allegations of improper training)
Liability Limit Options
$250,000 Limit for $215 per year
$500,000 Limit for $320 per year
$1,000,000 Limit for $350 per year

Not bad for $350 a year....

I don't always get due respect, thank you.
You've given the wrong question to the wrong agent. Liability covers someone falling off your front step or out of your airplane, etc. and suing you as well as a hunting/shooting accident. etc., etc. plus my $1mm State Farm coverage is about 1/2 what NRA is going to charge you. Incidentally, $5mm coverage is way above board.
I think you have an anti-gun agent.

Remember, this is a commercial policy, as it is for his instructor business. It will more than likely be more expensive than a policy for your homeowners or personal property.

Thanks, I overlooked that not so minor detail.

I'd second this; when I had renters insurance with state farm, I was offered a rider on the policy for firearms. At the time, I didn't have enough to warrant it, butit was discussed.

No problem, you are very welcome :-)

My agent contacted the guy in Dallas (?) that supposedly handles the underwriting and they *can* cover my classroom stuff, but not the range activities as apparently there is too much room for error.

I may be completely wrong, but I believe that is for ownership of firearms, not conducting training classes where theres a potential for injury or death. I too had the same coverage when I was an apartment dweller. It was intended as a separate rider for burglary as guns are quite expensive.
