Does anyone have suggestions for keeping dogs and cats out of my flower beds and shrubs? I heard about commercial repellents but I don't know anyone who uses them. Any good? Better options?

I can solve the problem with a 22 but I'm willing to try a non-lethal response first.

I know this isn't the response you wanted, but I worked with a guy who had a loose dog problem in his neighborhood and he "marked" all the loose animals with a paintball gun. He said it was funny as heck seeing cats and dogs running around with lime green flanks. After about a month, he had no more problems with loose animals in his yard.

Many years ago we were having problems with roaming dogs upsetting trash cans. In the lawn and garden section of the local K-Mart they had a very inexpensive dog repellent that was in the form of green balls about 0.5 inches in diameter and had the consistency of a hard soap. The had a strange but not objectionable odor. The procedure for use to rub them on the objects/areas to keep the dogs away from or scatter the balls around the lawn if you wanted to keep them out of the yard. They were amazingly effective. We never had a dog problem as long as we used them. I do not remember the name of the product, but if you see something similar, you might give it a try.

I have had success with Renardine to keep cats away from particular areas although it has an unplesant odor in my opinion. It is also supposed to work for dogs, but I have never tried it for them.

moth balls will repel dogs and cats but keep in mind: moth balls are poisonous and if a child gets hold of one and puts it in their mouth...well, you get the idea.
i bought a repellent at home depot and discovered it was mostly black pepper. i've been buying large containers of coarse ground black pepper at sams and have had very good results. once you break their habit of visiting your yard they stay away for awhile.
my question: why would someone think it is acceptable to let their dog take a dump in my yard? i use pepper because i'm not allowed to shoot the dog. btw, i don't hate dogs, i just think people should be responsible for their own pets. ok, rant over.

Orange peels and other citrus bits. Cats and dogs usually severely dislike it.

If you've got a dog of your own, put his solid waste in there too, that can also help cats and other dogs out.

I know of two cats personally that have absolutely no objection to Oranges...but they are weird even for cats.

Being an organic gardner, I use groung red or black pepper. No poisons. Had a possom get a nose full. Now that was funny.
