Your gun for groceries.

That's the goal of a gun buyback from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Reunion Arena, during which each unloaded, operational firearm surrendered will fetch a $50 Kroger grocery gift card.

People trading in their guns must present identification, city officials say.

"It would be a failure on our part if we do not take an initiative," said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway, who is helping lead the effort.

Event sponsors include Dallas Police, KBFB-FM 97.9 "The Beat," and KSOC-FM 94.5, One-Dallas, Univision 23, Schepps Dairy and Better Dallas Safer Dallas.

Dallas is not using public money to purchase the gift cards, which Kroger is providing at a 30 percent discount to event sponsors, Dallas spokesman Frank Librio said.

Meanwhile, Dallas writer and gun rights advocate Trey Garrison says he may conduct an alternative gun buyback of his own -- with better prices for sellers. He says he'll pay in cash, too.

How much might Garrison spend?

"Depends on what the hardware is," he tells us.

I've got a set of 1911 grips I might trade for $50.

I wonder if they will broaden the offer to ammunition? I'll give them 25 rounds of 380 and throw in a non-functional mag.

The Bersa pistol is still functional but I'm holding out for the $100 offer before I part with it.

We talked about this not to long ago. Trey Garrison says he will be down there with envelopes containing $65 cash with which he will buy the better guns. I think that is a great idea. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

How much do you think the DPD would harrass us if we joined him?

One of the CHL instructors here has a standing offer of $50.00 for any gun that wont run on his firing line. I only know of one that he has bought.

Now what you do is you set up a booth next to it and offer $60 per gun and rescue all those poor guns, if the gun doesn't work it can be gunsmith practice. You might get a bad deal but odds are you may find a few gems among them. Works even better if you have an FFL you can clean them up and sell the working ones.

Why would you need an FFL? BHO hasn't closed the "gunshow loop hole" yet.

Correct. :tiphat:

It would be interesting to see a report here from anyone that goes down and looks around.

Yeah i forgot about that, i was just imagining someone who owns a gun store could pick up some cheap merchandise and afford to spend some for some iffy guns.
