Set Myself Up For This One

Well fellow CHL’ers, I put myself in an awkward situation today. Been off work all week and promised the wife this day for running her all over the DFW area looking for a dress for her to wear at our daughters wedding. Lo and behold a store we go in has this perfect outfit for me to wear according to her

. Yes you guessed it, I’m packing and the car is a huge hike away. “You must try this on”,

great

. Here I am, the wife in the dressing room with me because I don’t want to walk out and leave my gun. Then the lady has to measure the inseam and well, I think you get the picture

. Just something to think about I guess. Plan better than I did!!!!!!

You didn't have your clothes tailored to include room for your carry gun?

The whole thing caught me off guard, but you know if I would have thought about it, I would have asked her. Great thought!!

I have had more than a couple of suit jackets and a sport coat slightly re-tailored to better conceal a waistband holster.
The folks at the Jos A Bank store where I go have been very understanding and cooperative about making it fit right.
No apparent qualms about the pistol.

Same here at Mens Wearhouse. I carried on purpose and made them aware of it so that they'd tailor to it. Neither the saleslady nor the tailor missed a beat, it was like they see it all the time.

My wife dragged me into a Men's Wearhouse a few years ago, we were just wandering around window shopping and our car was also a long way away. I was going to need a new suit for a cruise we were going on. I had my 1911 at 4 o'clock and two extra mags at 10, all I did was tell the guy I was carrying and he told me it was ok, they get that a lot and proceeded to measure me with everything on.
If I ever need another suit, I will be shopping there.

I suspect that men who buy sport coats and suits have a higher likelihood than the general public to be a CHL holder.

I was in Men's Warehouse in Plano yesterday buying pants and looking at sport coats. One was a little snug around the waist. I said I need a little extra room because of "all the junk normally on my belt". His response was a question-like "so you carry a gun"? Made for an awkward moment for me but he didn't seem to have a problem with it. He was the assistant manager according to his business card.

A sport coat with jeans or slacks is not only very stylish but offers near perfect concealment. Patterned jackets can nicely break up the outline of your weapon. Unless you carry SOB, be sure that you do not purchase any double vented jackets. The vent will open on your 4 o'clock carry and expose the pistol.

I wish I had the same experience you folks did at Men's Warehouse. I got fitted for a suit a while back, and they wouldn't fit me for the gun. I believe they called out security as well, as I noticed one of their SUVs pulled up outside the door with lights flashing for the duration of my visit.
Here's a quote from a thread a while back when it happened:

She hemmed and hawed (no pun intended

) about it and went into the back for several minutes and returned. I then noticed the mall security folks camped outside the store in their SUV (there was an outside entrance) for the remainder of my time there. She wouldn't fit me for the gun....
Please...spend your hard earned money somewhere else next time. There are many taylors mature enough to work with you regarding firearms.
I was on a budget and in somewhat of a time crunch. It wasn't my first choice of places to go, but was the only place I knew of that had a decent Big&Tall selection as I have broad shoulders and a large neck. Given more advanced notice, I would have gladly gone somewhere else.

Personally, I would send a letter of complaint. The Men's Wearhouse near me is used by many undercover & business types, and fits without batting an eye. If the tailor isn't professional enough to handle a concealed firearm, they shouldn't be working there. Besides, what ever happened to "You'll like the way you look. I guarantee it." as claimed by George Zimmer

Well, considering how freaked out she was initially, I'd say she handled the situation relatively well. I can't completely fault her for not wanting to fit with the gun... It is a small store, and there was no way to do the fitting discreetly and completely away from other customers. Their fitting area is almost smack-dab in the middle of the store and is without privacy walls. I agree that the people who work there should be properly prepared to work with clients who carry handguns, and would imagine that this should be addressed at a training level. Concealed handguns had obviously not been addressed at all in this particular employee's training, as she was beside herself at what to do initially, and could only mutter "I don't think we allow that in here". The mall and store are definitely not posted in any way. I'll see if I can come up with a suggestion about this to send to their corporate offices.

Yeah, I think a lot of people have a hard time distinguishing between, "I have a CHL, and am presently carrying" and "I HAVE A GUN!"
I've been wondering how I should handle this myself the next time I need to get fitted for a suit or just some nice slacks. Maybe I'll just not carry, and say something like, "I often carry concealed, so please factor that into your measurements."

I can hear it now, "Do you have your CHL or are you just happy to see me?"
