Is there a list somewhere for the order of steps? Do you get the app before you take the class? Vice versa?

You can apply online before you take the class but make sure to allow enough time for DPS to mail the paperwork to you. Alternately, many instructors have blank application packets which students can complete during class.

I suggest using an instructor who includes prints/photos/notary because it simplifies your life.

Read this discussion for some good advice: http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_F ... =36&t=2059" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You can do it either way. If you have at least 30 days before taking your class, then you can apply with DPS on their website. If you have less than 30 days, I suggest my students just use one of my packets.

Welcome to the forum!

Its up to you what you want to do really. You can apply online before the class and get your materials or you can just take a class that offers the "full service" (paperwork, fingerprints, photos, etc.). I personally went with a class that did everything for me and gave me the application along with how to fill it out correctly. I would recommend that you take the same type of class, regardless of how you decide to get the paperwork, because of the stories I have heard on here about the trouble of getting your prints and photos done elsewhere. It would just make it a lot simpler for you. Hope that helps!

I agree with bonehead. If at all possible, go the full service route even if it costs you a little more. I took a class from a retired sheriff who owns a gunshop/range, and he provided the class, the application, the prints, and the photos. Well worth the money. In fact, before we left, his wife went around and double checked everyone's packet. All I had to do was go by the post office, pay the postage and send it to Austin...and wait.

Or...
you can save about two weeks in the process if you fill out your application before the class and have it in hand for the class.
I would only recommend this if you have a clean background. If you don't it will probably delay the process as it will get kicked backed by DPS for documentation.
And make sure it's a class that is all inclusive. Then you can drop it off at the post office on your way back from class! Certified, return receipt of course.
:woohoo

If I take the class tomorrow and mail my application monday, I will get my CHL about two weeks after my friend who fills out his application tomorrow and takes the class when he gets his paperwork from DPS? That doesn't sound right.

That's what I've been told. I'll let you know how it works for me! The total time is about the same, but if you fill out the app. on line before the class, the time from class to receiving plastic is shorter. (you know, the foot tappin time!) And you'll have your PIN before you mail in your package because it is mailed to you with the application you have filled out.
