Just some background information: A friend of mine and I took our CHL course on the same day. DPS had sent her application back to her to get some missing information, but she's been dragging her feet. She is a bit discouraged because of the wait time (Harris County) and because she feels as though she's very limited in where she can carry, most notably at work. She feels the time she would need her gun the most is when exiting her building in the evening. She told me her building had a 30.06 sign on the front door so I went today to take a look. Here's what I saw.



Sorry for the poor quality, this was taken from my phone. As you can see, the letters are valid block of sufficient height, and the bilingual bit is there. I was trying to get a good angle to show how difficult it was to see the sign because of a lack of contrast. The whole contrast issue was discussed with the Hobby Center discussion about its 30.06 posting. Can anyone provide some input?

Other items to note:
1. This isn't on texas3006.com yet, but I will post it after getting some input.
2. This is a Girl Scouts regional headquarters building. AFAIK, the Girl Scouts are a privately owned corporation, correct?

IANAL, but I believe it is legal. Contrast is a gray area, and IMO if it isn't clear letter on glass, then it is contrasting.

And Girl Scouts are a private organization and can post on their building.

I would hardly think that black letters on tinted glass would be considered a great example of contrast, but I don't want to be a test case. Nor would I want my friend to be one, either.

It's better than the white letters on glass. Those just disappear.

You might be able to talk your way out of an issue if you were just a visitor, but not as an employee. You go through that door enough that anyone would say you had ample opportunity to be able to see it, even if it weren't contrasting. I imagine that if they are posted 30.06, they probably also have employment policies preventing carry anyway.

I agree with others on the original question of the validity of the sign. Are all the entrances posted?
But, your friend who is delaying on completing the process for the CHL is another story. She has paid the money.
As some one I once know who said to a mutual friend of ours who was considering starting med. school at 50, but was hung up on the fact that he wouldn't be through until he was 58, "How old do you think you'll be in 8 years if you don't go?" Encourage her to finish what she started because time passes regardless and it'll be here before she knows it.

Good point. It's still just a shame that these criminal bait, EXCUSE ME, CHL unfriendly zones do these things out of ignorance, stubbornness, or misinformation.

Excellent way of putting it! I think she finally got the hint when I told her how great I feel to be carrying. She is sending in what DPS needs on Monday.

Wouldnt "contrast" depend on whats behind glass door? If theree is a 300 lbs guy wearinga black shirt, you could argue it cant be seen.

But then, as stated, the company probably has employment guidelines regarding guns in the work place.

Many hospitals are posted the same way, everything correct but white letters on clear glass. My CHL instructor said that his view was that this is 'technically' not a valid sign because you see the floor through the glass as the 'contrast' and the contrast is not a part of the actual sign (letters on clear glass is the sign). But his counsel was that if I printed or was caught I would definitely be arrested for violating 30.06 and I'd have to go through the legal process with lawyer costs to prove my case. So he suggested I treat it as valid just to avoid a potential hassle factor.

It's not at all surprising - they have been a liberal, women's lib agenda for at least 20 years now.

To paraphrase an old commercial - they're not your mother's girl scouts...

Maybe they should re-think their stance on concealed weapons.

SAN ANTONIO - Two little girls and their troop leader were robbed outside a North Side store Wednesday night. The Brownie troop leader became emotional as she told News 4 WOAI how she witnessed the thief steal from the two 3rd graders.

"They didn't take it from me. They took it from my girls," the troop leader said.

The 9-year-olds had set up and sold their cookies at the Walgreens in the Medical Center several times before, and everything had been fine. But Wednesday night, a man stole all of their hard-earned money.

"We were finishing up our shift and we were packing up our cookies," explained the girls' troop leader.

That troop leader, who doesn't want to be identified, said a man then walked up to their table.

"I didn't even think he was looking at the money," said told News 4 WOAI. "I thought he was leaning over to look in the box, like 'What do you have in there?'"

She said then all of a sudden, the man snatched their bag of money and ran off. He got away with about $250. The troop leader chased him, but he got into a car with a woman and drove off.

"The one thing that I was screaming was to call the police, and I just kept yelling out the license plate number," the troop leader recalled.

News 4 WOAI tracked that license plate number to a home on the West Side. Our crew knocked on the door, but no one answered.

"I try to teach the girls that nothing's given, you have to earn it, said the troop leader. "And they earned that money."

The little girls had to learn a very grownup lesson, but intend to continue selling cookies to try to earn more money.

"Both little girls are scared," explained the troop leader. "And they've learned, firsthand, there are bad people out there."

News 4 WOAI learned the man accused of taking the money was inside the Walgreens store prior to the theft. Police are now reviewing surveillance video from inside the store.
