Ginsburg: Possible court opening soon

Mar 13 01:01 PM US/Eastern By MELISSA TRUJILLO

BOSTON (AP) - Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg told law students there could be an opening on the Supreme Court soon but didn't hint at who might be leaving.
Ginsburg spoke Friday at New England Law's annual "Law Day."

In a question-and-answer session, she said the nine justices only take pictures together when a new member is added. She said: "We haven't had any of those for some time, but surely we will soon."

She declined to take questions from reporters at the event.

The 75-year-old justice had surgery last month for pancreatic cancer but returned to the bench without missing a day of work. She said advice from fellow cancer survivor Sandra Day O'Connor on when to schedule chemotherapy has helped her to keep up with the court's pace.

------------------------------------

Be prepared for a younger, more progressive, living document supporting, nomination and appointment to the court real soon...And I bet they want this to be the news for a while, so they can put the economy on the back burner, so they really need this distraction for the un-washed masses...

But we knew this was coming anyway...

I would only point out that, if Ginsburg steps down, she'll be replaced by another just like her - the court will still have 4 liberals (Bryer, Souter, Stevens, + new guy/gal), 4 conservatives (Roberts, Alito, Scalia, & Thomas), and 1 swing voter (Kennedy). The other justice (besides Ginsburg) who might retire at this point is Stevens. I don't see Scalia retiring any time soon. He's having too much fun being the thorn in the liberal side.

We should be praying for the good health and continued vigor of Justices Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy.

Which would be a shame; even though he's more often a liberal, he occasionally tosses a surprise out there. If replaced under Obama, it certainly would be with someone who toes the party line (or Obama's version of it) at all times.

And Hussein Obama's version is worse than the streight party line. :banghead:
