Went to the Georgia Arms website http://www.georgia-arms.com/ and was greeted by a notice stating because of the destruction of the used cases Georgia Arms has quit selling 223 and 308. Anyone else heard of this? This is kinda scary! Once you start putting all of the pieces together it gets real scary!

I went and did a quick check, and I have not seen this reuirement, and the distributors are still stating on the individual "lots" of materials that mutilation is not required for 5.56/.223 and .308 expended casings...

I tried calling the Georgia supplier there and nobody was available to answer the question...

If this is true (and I have my doubts) then yes, this is disturbing, and worth a little more digging to see if this is true...

I guess I'll have to amend what my Daddy used to say about Falstaff bottle caps:

Dunno what to think. Went to govliquidation.com (referenced in the above link), searched on "brass cartridge" and came up with two lots of expended brass.

I am as paranoid about the Obamacons as anyone, so not willing to dismiss this as a rumor just yet. Something to keep an eye on.

Plus am kicking self -- never realized I could get brass to reload with from DLA. On the other hand, would be tough to stash 23,000 lbs under the bed until I get around to reloading it...

At our range alone we shoot well over a million 5.56 NATO a year and thats not counting 7.62, 9mm, etc. The military is having trouble keeping up with ammo demands and we have to fight to get any ammo for training because it all goes to fill-in-the-blankistan. It's my understanding that the empty brass gets deprimed, cleaned and melted down to be made into new cases. Outright destroying the brass just wouldnt make a whole ton of sense IMO.

The Air Force collects brass for recycling..... Not sure what they get recycled into but I know I have picked up tons of it for that reason!

Has anyone run this by Snopes.com or Googled it for validity? Please do.

I can't confirm this on either Snopes.com or Google.

I have a feeling that an industrious member here will get thru to Georgia Arms (Monday) and get the story from them...Their webpage is a bit confusing to some, including me, but I just would like to understand clearly what this is all about...

GI Brass has the following following notice:

Effective Immediately:
Orders for all military brass acquired thru government auction is hereby
suspended until further notice. If recent auction purchased brass is
is declared unrestricted, all orders will be filled in order received

So it sounds like the gov't has shut down auctioning off brass.

I just heard the Georgia Arms guy on Gresham's Gun Talk radio show. He said that the DLA has reclassified fired military brass as being class "B". This means that the purchaser agrees to shred it. The only possible use for it after that is to sell it to a foundry for melting. The foundry will turn around and sell it to the world's largest purchaser of scrap metal today: The People's Republic of China.

He gave a web site reference where he has posted DOD's new terms (imposed by the DLA), but I was driving and couldn't write it down.

I've got a pretty good idea about how the Texas Reps and Senators are going to feel about the Feds wanting to shred military brass ...

Maybe I'm trying to wish it away, but I still haven't found mention of this on Google, Snopes or the DLA websites.

Georgia Arms is the 5th largest ammunition manufacturer is the U.S.. Their president is the one I heard of Gresham's radio show yesterday. All I could find on his website is this: http://georgia-arms.com/
