1884 - Standard Time was adopted throughout the United States, following an international conference held in Washington, D.C.
1964 - Kitty Genovese was murdered in Queens, New York.
1996 - A lunatic killed 16 kindergarten children and one teacher in Dunblane, Scotland. The killer owned only legally licensed weapons under the strict laws in effect at the time. This incident resulted in a complete ban on handguns for private citizens in the U.K.
