1996 - A lunatic killed 16 kindergarten children and one teacher in Dunblane, Scotland. The killer owned only legally licensed weapons under the strict laws in effect at the time. This incident resulted in a complete ban on handguns for private citizens in the U.K.

1964 - Kitty Genovese was murdered in Queens, New York.

This story is still being circulated as an example of man's inhumanity to man, or woman in this case.

In fact, no one "watched" or saw the unfortunate Ms. Genovese killed. It was after 3 a.m. on an unpleasant night (New York in early March), and no one was out.

One man shouted at the attacker and caused him to run away. The attacker returned later to finish the killing in a secluded place. Several people called the police, who found Ms. Genovese still alive an hour later.

The circumstances of the crime were exaggerated by news reports at the time and second-hand references in books and articles written years later.

Certainly it is unfortunate that no one intervened more decisively, but leaving an apartment in the middle of the night to intervene in a dispute between strangers is above and beyond the call of duty (IMHO).
