1775 - Patrick Henry made his famous "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech before the Virginia provincial convention.

1933 - The German Reichstag granted Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers.

1965 - The first manned Gemini mission launched with astronauts Virgil ("Gus") Grissom and John Young aboard. Grissom became the first astronaut to leave the atmosphere twice. He died two years later in the Apollo 1 disaster.

1983 - Pres. Reagan proposed the anti-missile defense system that became known as "Star Wars."

It is also the birthday of Pierre Simon Laplace (in 1749). Engineers/mathematicians will know this name.

I missed that one, but I am an engineer and I remember LaPlace. Brilliant man.

Yeah, LaPlace, Mozart, and I used to get together for beers every Friday night. Mozart was a hoot, but he went overboard with the fart jokes. ;-)
