Need an apartment in San Antonio

In my ever-changing plans for the future, it looks like I'll be going to San Antonio this summer and the rest of my family will be staying behind in Houston to allow my son to attend his senior year here. So, I need a cheap one bedroom apartment in the vicinity of San Antonio starting July 1. East/SE/South preferred, smaller towns in the outlying area OK. Any pointers to inexpensive digs that aren't major security risks are appreciated.

How set are you on the East / SE / South side of town? These are generally the least desirable parts of town and rightfully so. Depending on where you'll be working in San Antonio, and if you want to stay east, I'd recommend looking towards the NE side of town.

I'll be at Brooks City Base. NE side is OK, that's where I lived when I was in San Antonio before and the drive to Brooks wasn't bad. I'd just like to avoid the north due to traffic, and the W/NW because I'll be frequently driving to Houston.

I agree. I suggest the NE side as well. I'm a bit biased though as that's the side of town I live on. I basically travel from Randolph AFB to Lackland AFB each day and the drive isn't too bad. Takes about a half an hour but the lack of major crime in this area makes the drive worth it.
