1822 - Florida became a U.S. territory.
1870 - During Reconstruction, Texas was readmitted to the Union.

The 15th amendment, which prohibits voter discrimination on the basis was race, was declared in effect.
1981 - John Hinckley Jr. shot Pres. Ronald Reagan, White House Press Secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy, and D.C. police officer Thomas Delehanty. All but Mr. Brady recovered from their injuries. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity and remains in custody, except for occasional visits to his parents.
