I was smoking cigars with a group of buddies when a new guy joined us.

One of the first things he asked was our individuals ages. I thought this rather odd, but it seemed harmless.

Then, as each confessed his age, it proved the new guy the oldest in our bunch. He then proceeded to act somehow as if this tidbit proved him superior. His manner took on a subtly unpleasant arrogance.

Some, when of a certain age, start to actually believe their age proves something beyond their good luck and survivor-ability. Age, in and of itself doesn't confer much of anything else. Perhaps wisdom for some and none for others.

Often, this sub-set of oldsters will start out a conversation with an imperious variation of: "I'm (fill in the blank / age) and I can tell you with great certainty..." or "at my age you'll understand better..."

The mutations of this declamatory - I'm smarter cuz I'm older stuff simply makes the utterer sound like someone the balance of any group (if they're kind) simply humor, (while quietly eye-rolling) and think the self-important old guy something of a self singled out jackass.

Fortunately, most of the older guys I know aren't like this, but I've happen across them now and again.

How about you - know anyone like this?

I'm (fill in the blank / age). I have noticed just the opposite. Youngsters seem to have the air of superiority when talking with the old guys like me.

I dont brag about my age, heck I am only 25. I do make a point of saying something about the wisdom I have gained when trying to talk to my younger brothers about there idiocy. I do have to say that in the last 3 years I feel as though my experiences have taught me lots more than I gained in the previous 22. Even though my grammar and spelling is still atrocious.

I will add this though. I have found that idiots come in all ages, the most dangerous one seem to be the older ones. Kind of strange if you ask me, I always thought that the younger morons could do the most damage to what they are "experts" in. I have been proven very wrong time and time again. Seems that people get complacent when they age which leads itself to many bad decisions among other things.

Must be the college kids...think they know everything. oh...were you looking at me? haha j/k. Yes I agree from 18-25 it seems that you know everything....until you realize you don't. Luckily I figured out at about 19 that I don't know jack and that my parents, wouldn't ya know it, were right about a few things (where they wereTOTALLY wrong and haven't been there before that!). Now, I make a concentrated effort to really listen to people and if you can separate the wheat from the chaff, then you will always walk away with something. Even if a person turns out to be full of hot air, you can learn how they put off people and try to NOT be like them.

My guess is that with the joker in the OP he would have had an air of superiority even if he weren't the oldest. Age is just a number after all...

I have to agree that there are those who think themselves to be superior to others come in all ages. I have to admit though most of the experiences I have had was with the younger people and their "I know everything" attitude. However, those that have turned their speedometer back...several times...have gained some insight to what life is all about, of course, there are exceptions to every rule. The best lesson I ever learned was to "listen" you can learn something from every one. I had rather sit and listen to some one that has a whole lot of miles under his belt...however, it is getting harder and harder to find one with more miles than...

I don't necessarily brag about my age, but I do feel good about it. I don't mind telling you that I'm... ?

I am very happy that I've made it this far, and pray that I am allowed to go further still.

Good luck? Yes, I've had some. Bad luck? I've been there too. Haven't we all. Survivability? Yep. How about grace? I wouldn't be here without it, and I thank God for it!

I'm a grandpa as of two months ago and I can't help but brag about it. I just pray I'm 'old' enough and wise enough to be a good example instead of a horrible warning!

I'm reminded of David Allan Coe's "The Ride" when I contemplate the nature of this post. Filter out the useless drivel from another's presentation and take to heart that which is useful. You'll miss priceless morsels of wisdom over the years if You're pre-occupied with assigning yourself as superior to a sage speaker in your midst at the very moment you need to be intently tuned in.

my wife is 10 years older then me so i brag to her. bt other then that i can careless about my age or anyone else. most of my good friends are older then me anyways. it dont bother me or them

I would cut him some slack. He probably has nothing else to brag about.

I assume that you are an adult? It's true, many folks attain an advanced age entirely by accident. OTOH, I'm reminded of Richard Pryor's quip, "...the cemeterys are full of smart young {you know the word}..."

I'm 56, but what do I know?
