1836 - In the aftermath of the battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican general and dictator Santa Anna was captured and held as a prisoner of war. He agreed to Sam Houston's demand to withdraw Mexican troops from Texas.
1889 - The Oklahoma land rush began.
1898 - The Spanish-American War began, and Congress authorized the creation of the Rough Riders.
1970 - The first Earth Day was observed.
