1800 - Congress established the Library of Congress.
1877 - Federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans, ending the military occupation of the Confederacy.
1898 - Spain declared war on the U.S.
1915 - The Ottoman Empire began arresting and relocating Armenians, in an operation that resulted in over one million deaths and remains culturally and politically toxic to this day.
1916 - The Easter Rising began in Dublin. It failed to secure Irish independence, but it put the British on notice and motivated Irish Republicans.
1967 - Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov became the first person to die during a space mission.
1980 - The failed U.S. attempt to rescue the American hostages in Iran began; eight U.S. servicemen died.
