This day in history - May 4

1776 - Rhode Island declared its independence.
1886 - A labor demonstration at Haymarket Square in Chicago turned into a riot. Someone threw a bomb that killed one police officer. Eight officers were killed and 60 were injured, most probably by "friendly fire." Four demonstrators or rioters were killed.
Eight anarchists were subsequently found guilty of the bombing. Four were executed. One committed suicide rather spectacularly in prison (search for Louis Lingg).
1970 - National Guardsmen stationed at Kent State University fired 61 shots on anti-war protesters, killing four and wounding nine others. Two of the dead were not part of the protest.
It was an alarming, depressing time, when the future of the country seemed very much in doubt.
1998 - The Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski, was effectively sentence to life in prison on a plea bargain.
2006- Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life in prison.
Strange coincidences.
