1676 - Bacon's Rebellion began in Virginia. This first act of rebellion against British authority is now largely forgotten.

1775 - Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys, jointly led by Col. Benedict Arnold, captured Fort Ticonderoga.
1863 - Confederate General Stonewall Jackson died after being accidentally shot by his own troops.
1865 - Union forces captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Georgia.
1869 - The construction of the first transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory, Utah.
1924 - J. Edgar Hoover became director of the FBI, a job he held for nearly half a century.
1940 - Germany invaded Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain resigned and was replaced by Winston Churchill.
1941 - The British House of Commons was destroyed by a German air raid.
1960 - The USS Triton completed the first circumnavigation of the globe under water.
