1767 - The British government revoked the import duty on tea that had led to the Boston Tea Party. The tax had never been collected effectively.
1787 - The Constitutional Convention was supposed to meet in Philadelphia, but delegates were delayed by slow travel.
1796 - Edward Jenner vaccinated a boy against smallpox by using the cowpox virus.
1804 - The Lewis and Clark Expedition set out from St. Louis, at that time the western outpost of American civilization.
1908 - The world’s first airplane passenger was carried in a Wright flyer.
1948 - The state of Israel came into existence.
1949 - Pres. Truman signed a bill establishing a rocket test range at Cape Canaveral.
1955 - The Warsaw Pact was signed.
1973 - The United States launched Skylab 1, its first manned space station.
