1652 - The Rhode Island colony outlawed slavery, the first American political entity to do so.
1896 - The U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, legalizing segregation for the next half-century.
1927 - A lunatic who blamed school taxes for his financial problems blew up a school in Bath, Michigan, killing 45 people, including the school board and himself. He had killed his pregnant wife earlier in the day.

It was the deadliest mass murder in American history until the Oklahoma City bombing.
