This is a not so gentle reminder of what happens when you don't follow the rules. This happened at a local gun range while reholstering a loaded firearm with finger on trigger.

I got that pic from another source, and it claimed that that was a shotgun wound, the person was shooting sporting clays and rested the muzzle on his foot, and then pulled the trigger.

Looks a lot more like a .45 wound to me then a shotgun wound. Wouldn't there be significant "burn" on the shoe if the firearm had been resting on his foot?

Unless he was shooting wadcutters, that hole is way too neat to be a .45, and too large, I can believe a 20 gauge contact wound.

If it was a shotgun it would have blown a hole in the barrel and the other leg might have also been hamburger.

I am glad you said that this was from another board.... I was going to suggest that you change your handle, to

hop-a-long. :eek6

or

shuffle .45 :evil2:

or

hole-e moley :rolll

or

anyone else?

This is a wake up call about safety. My father in law, a retired Lt Colonel, had a ND in his house so it can happen to anyone. I am trying to keep mine from happening, trying my BEST.

Not necessarily

I'm not the OP, but I have watched many shotgun shooters rest their guns on their toes over the years and always wondered when I was going to see pics of someone having blown off a toe.

Besides the hole in the shoe not appearing to be correct for a .45 (size and shape) there is also the matter of the very obvious burns on the top side of the toes as well as the (relatively) massive avulsion of tissue through and through the affected toes. A .45 would not make that sort of wound path and nowhere near that large. I realize that it is virtually impossible to judge the size of the hole and the avulsion from what we can see, but just consider the diameter of the avulsion in relation to the great toe. If that wound was caused by a .45, then that person has pretty tiny feet.

:iagree: I read that article on Massad Ayoob blog "The Price of Carelessness" he stated it was a shotgun.
This guy was lucky. The muzzle was resting in the space between the great toe and the next one. He may or may not keep the big toe. Had the gun been a couple of inches back, he might have lost the whole foot. I’m told that it was a light clay bird load of small #8 birdshot pellets
Warning: There are graphic photos of wound

I may still have my old leather toe pad from the days I shot trap. Trap, Skeet and Sporting shooters are not allowed to load before they enter their station under threat of disqualification, IIRC.

Well, so much for the rules and common sense. :banghead:

I apologize for the post. I received this in email from what I thought was a trusted source. Apparently, I need to be a little less trusting.

And, for what it's worth, I have also been guilty of the common practice of resting the shotgun on my shoe between skeet shooting positions. Maybe I will rethink that practice too.

Another day, another lesson learned.

You shouldn't apologize for something as important as gun safety. I don't really care how the guy got shot in the foot, but I do care that someone is concerned enough to post something like this to make people think of gun safety. Good job! :clapping:

Its like I tell my students "Keep your booger hooks off the bang switch!"

Some people just cant learn, until something like this comes along and makes them learn.
