Though others had flown kites and small gliders, this was the first step in the unbroken evolution of controlled, manned flight.

1896 - Henry Ford made an unnannounced, successful test run of an automobile in Detroit.

1942 - The Battle of Midway began.

This was truly a turning point in history. Although the Japanese forces took a heavy toll on American forces in the next three years, they were always on the defensive.

1944 - The German submarine U-505 was captured intact. It is on display today at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

Same day, same year, the U.S. 5th Army liberated Rome.

1954 - Arthur Murray flew an X-1A rocket plane to a record 27,000 meters.

1956 - A speech by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev denouncing Stalin's atrocities was made public.

1989 - Chinese army troops stormed Tiananmen Square in Beijing to crush the pro-democracy movement, killing and injuring an unknown number of people.

The U-505 is the last captured enemy vehicle by the US Navy

The story behind the capture is quite amazing....the story about the re-construction/preservation is even more amazing!

One of the truly remarkable details is that only one German sailor died, and no Americans.

By that point in the war, a lot of Germans wanted to be captured by the Americans.
