1775 - According to some histories, the Continental Congress adopted the name United States, in place of United Colonies. However, I can't find an original source.
1776 - Richard Henry Lee, delegate from Virginia, brought the following resolution before the Continental Congress:

1892 - Homer Plessy, a black man, refused to move from a seat reserved for whites on a train in New Orleans. He was prosecuted, and his case led to the U.S. Supreme Court's "separate but equal" decision in Plessy v. Ferguson.
1981 - The Israeli military bombed a nuclear power plant in Iraq where Israeli intelligence suspected nuclear weapons were being developed.

No more seminal event occurred in U.S. history. The Declaration of Independence was signed a month later.Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.
