1861 - Tennessee seceded from the Union.
1956 - The first officially acknowledged death in Vietnam occurred, U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant Richard B. Fitzgibbon Jr., murdered by another airman.
Sgt. Fitzgibbon's son Robert died in Vietnam in 1965. They are the only American father and son known to have died in the Vietnam War.
1965 - U.S. forces in Vietnam were ordered to engage in offensive attacks. General William Westmoreland predicted victory by 1967.
The U.S.S.R. launched Luna 6, an unmanned craft intended to land on the moon. It went off course.
1967 - During the Six-Day War, Israeli military jets attacked the USS Liberty in the Mediterranean Sea, killing 34 Americans.
1969 - Pres. Nixon announced the withdrawal of 25,000 troops from Vietnam.
1978 - The Source, the first online network available to the general public, went online. It cost $7 to $21 per hour for access with modem speeds up to 1,200 Baud.
1998 - Charlton Heston was elected president of the NRA.
