1732 - James Oglethorpe received the charter for the Georgia colony.

1883 - The first urban electric railway line began operation in Chicago. Called the El for elevated, it is still in operation on some of the original tracks. 1954 - Army lawyer Joseph N. Welch confronted Senator Joseph R. McCarthy during a congressional hearing with the immortal words, "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

McCarthy had claimed that defense plants were infiltrated by Communist agents and sympathizers.
These widely televised hearings, among the first government proceedings to be seen on TV, were the beginning of the end for McCarthy, who was later censured by the Senate and drank himself to death within three years.
1959 - The first ballistic missile submarine, the George Washington was launched.
1973 - Secretariat, one of the two best thoroughbred race horses in history, won the Triple Crown. He set records in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes that stand to this day.
