First 'Stab-Proof' Knife to Go on Sale in the U.K.



The first "anti-stab" knife is set to hit store shelves in the U.K., designed to work as normal in the kitchen but ineffective as a weapon.

The knife has a rounded edge instead of a point and will snag on clothing and skin to make it more difficult to stab someone.

It was invented by industrial designer John Cornock, who was inspired by a documentary in which doctors advocated banning traditional knives.

Cornock, 42, from Swindon. England, said that the knife will cut vegetables, but will make it almost impossible to stab someone to death and will reduce the risk of accidental injuries.

"It can never be a totally safe knife, but the idea is you can’t inflict a fatal wound," he said. "Nobody could just grab one out of the kitchen drawer and kill someone."

Am I missing something here? I would think that to be useful, a razor-sharp edge on a kitchen knife is a must. I wonder how long it would take a BG to switch from poking to slicing in order to accomplish his task?

Yep, instead of stabbing you, I will just cut your throat (which is more effective anyway).

You're not missing anything. No doubt the designer knows that as well. However, that clever fellow figured out a way to make money off the tomfoolery of the UK government which has already taken the "blame objects for acts" strategy to stunning lengths. The politicians will probably do his advertising and support his "invention" of a predulled knife by requiring that all knives sold use his design. Can't blame him for that.

With the money he makes, he might just be able to relocate to a free country.

Wait til the fearocrats (a new Excaliber term - feel free to use it) figure out that anybody with a file or a grinding wheel can fix those "stab proof" knives to work just like the old ones in a jiffy. A whole new cottage industry will likely spring up to service the modification market.

Oh boy! I can get in on the ground-floor selling grinding-wheels/stones in the UK and make a killing! No pun intended.

As the phrase says, 'There's a sucker born every minute' I don't care how pointed something is, with enough force it can be used as a weapon. Check out this set of keys in the x-ray (WARNING, some images are pretty graphic.)

Kind of funny actually, back in the old Navy, in the days of wooden ships and iron men, when you went through boot camp one of the things you were issued was a Camp King folding knife. When you arrived aboard a ship, the first the the Boatswain would do is take you down to the Shipfitter's shack and stick the first half inch of the blade of your knife in a vice and snap it off. It was then up to you to smooth it down properly.

This was to prevent you from stabbing yourself while working on lines, and of course the added benefit of not being able to stab others helped.

The phone company uses knives similar in nature, what is called a "modified Sheepsfoot" blade with no real point and a thick hard back to be able to pound on it with a chipping hammer.

Gonna show my age here but anybody remember the transition to "Captain Kangaroo" scissors in grade schools and day care centers. A huge success in stopping the tragic trend of stabbings by 3-6 year olds in the United States.

I, for one, think this guy has a great idea. Don't be surprised to see this being pushed by your government sponsored "community action" organization in the near future. Even if you are a non-believer, please don't be offended if you are asked for a generous contribution to help the cause and save untold lives.

For this idea to be effective the British cops will have to
confiscate all the real knives in the country.
