I am new to the site and must say...there is some great information here.

As I wait for my plastic to arrive, I have decided to purchase a subcompact Glock for summer carrying. I tend to wear shorts and t-shirts almost every day and want something that has power, is light and can be concealed easier than a full size gun. I have narrowed it down to the Glock 29sf (10mm), Glock 30 (.45 acp) and Glock 27 (.40). Each one has it's pros and cons (power, expensive ammo, versatility, etc...) and I am having a tough time making a decision. I LOVE the versatility and power of the 10mm but I already have a Glock 20sf. Does anybody have any thoughts that may make this easier?

I have the Glock 27 and have had no problems whatsoever with it, to include finding ammo.

get a glock 27, 40 cal for defense. Then buy a 9mm barrel and magazine and now you have 2 ammo options, you could even get a .357 sig barrel and magazine for the same effect! 3 guns in one!!!! Even get a 23 (better sight radius, it is what I carry and I can conceal it with no problems!) and have the grip cut down to sub-compact.

I have a Glock 30 and it's very wide. You might want to keep that in mind when picking.

I have a Glock 20SF (10mm) and it is, by far, my favorite gun. I trust my 10mm in the woods over my .41 cal and inthe house over my .45 cal. You can actually get very cheap ammo from Georgia Arms for the range.

The concealment and overpenatration questions keep me from buying the 29SF right now. The Glock 30 poses the same concealment problem as the G29, which takes it off of my list. Since I can either drop a .40 cal barrel into the G29 or use lower grain shells to make it shoot like a .40, I am down to two issues:

1. Concealment/weight - the G27 is smaller and lighter (G27 easily wins)
2. Versatility - although the G27 can be dropped to a 9mm or 357sig, the 10mm seems more versatile with big gun capacity. Since it would be a self defense weapon, I wouldn't carry anything lower than a .40 cal, which I can convert a 10mm to. (G29 easily wins)

Absolutely not true. I can find 10mm ammo all day long for prices just slightly more than 40 S&W or about the same as 45ACP.

To answer the OP question, I can tell you I have the G29 and I like it, but it can be a bit heavy and large for true summer carry. I'm am not a 40 cal fan so a G27 would not be a choice for me personally. I would rather and do on occasion carry a G26 with a +3 mag extension and it's very comfortable.

I ended up getting the 29sf...I just love it's versatility. If it gets too heavy for my shorts during the summer, I can always carry my .38 in my pocket.

The good thing is now my wife wants to take her CHL course and buy a Glock 27! I win.

Never tried the 40 barrel in the 29. Can I just replace the barrel?
Is it a shorter chamber that's needed?
I've been told the 40 shoots fine in the 20/29 as is, but not tried it myself.

Regarding the 10mm ammo unavailability, I found as much as I could afford at Cabela's.
Balistics tests I've read have the 10mm near the 357 in one shot stops; above the 45, 40 and certainly the puny 9mm.
Regarding overpenetration, I'd be more worried about unitended penetration of the 9mm rounds which missed the target because I had to keep firing at the perp as he continues to come.

Ohh Wow!! I really thought of it as a somewhat exotic round that would have taken a beating during the current shortages. I must admit that the Wallyworlds and Academys I have visited have been completely out of hand gun ammo. I had never considered buying a 10mm because I assumed the ammo would be overpriced even in the good times.

I carry a G30 or should I say, "carried" a G30. With this recent hot weather I've switched to a mouse gun (Ruger LCP) so that i can wear shorts and a t-shirt. The G30 is a bit wide, 1.27" and I prefer to wear some kind of cover garment when I'm carrying it..way to hot for that right now. Other than having trouble carrying in this warm weather, I prefer the G30. The 10 rounds of .45 auto are a reassuring weight! It shoots great and I've never had a malfunction.

I'm a bit rotund, alright fat (6 ft and 250 lbs). I have had the 27 and now have the 30. I prefer the 30, I do not think it is too wide, but I also carry a full size 1911. Maybe the normal size guys find it too wide. I prefer the extra power of .45 if I only have 11 shots (of course I carry from 1-4 extra mags with me depending on where I am going). I think the main issue is the right holster. I use the Comp Tac Minotaur and like it the best for IWB carry.
