This morning's Galveston County Daily News contained a story about a 16-year-old girl who reportedly shot and killed her sister while "playing with" a gun on Sunday morning. At the time the story was written, police were still investigating.

Police later charged the girl with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and took her into custody. Pending further investigation, charges against the mother of the deceased may be filed for Making a Firearm Accessible to a Child.
While the 16-year-old is charged, police still believe that the shooting was accidental, said Lt. D.J. Alvarez, a spokesman for the Galveston Police Department.

The weapon was reportedly a .40-caliber Glock pistol.

This event took place in the 3500 block of Avenue N 1/2, which is about 1/4 mile from my home.

That's just a rotten shame.

Momy should pay the consequences of the criminal act of allowing easy access to handguns for minors. Her daughter would have to go round of post traumatic depression. Momy committed an offense.

I think that you are drawing a conclusion based on facts not in evidence.

I don't suppose losing one child and having the other in custody is a penalty.

Such a shame... it looks like the 16 year old would have known better than to play with guns. What a tragedy.

My prayers go out to the family.
