1860- The Secret Service was created to investigate counterfeiting (one of the very particular powers that the Constitution delegates to the federal government).

1868 - Christopher Latham Sholes received a patent for the first typewriter to become commercially successful. He later sold the patent to Remington, the same Remington that still manufactures shotguns and rifles.

1931 - Wiley Post and Harold Gatty took off from New York on a flight around the world. They successfully finished the trip 8 days later.

1938 - The federal Civil Aeronautics Authority, the predecessor of the Federal Aviation Administration, was established.

1993 - Lorena Bobbitt made the unkindest cut of all.
