1608 - The city of Quebec was founded by Samuel de Champlain, one year after Jamestown. The French, British, and Americans were entangled in history for the following two centuries.

1754 - George Washington along with a British commander surrendered to the French at Fort Necessity, during the French & Indian War.

1775 - Gen. George Washington took command of the Continental Army.

1863 - The Battle of Gettysburg ended.

One unarguable fact about this battle is that it was the deadliest fought on American soil before or since. Nearly 8,000 men were killed in battle. Doubtless many more died later of injuries.

1890 - Idaho became the 43rd state.

1898 - The U.S. Navy broke the back of Spanish naval forces at Santiago, Cuba.

1915 - The U.S. began a military occupation of Haiti that continued for 29 years.

1930 - The Veterans Administration was created.

1976 - Israeli forces rescued most of the crew and passengers of an Air France plane that had been hijacked to Entebbe Airport in Uganda.

1988 - The crew of the USS Vincennes mistakenly shot down an Iran Air passenger jetliner over the Persian Gulf, during the Iran-Iraq War.
