Gaffney, South Carolina (north-central part of the state) -- Police are searching for a serial killer who is suspected of fatally shooting and possibly robbing four people in less than a week. Three middle-aged or elderly people were killed in their homes. One was killed in a business. The victim's 15-year-old daughter in that case was shot and remains in the hospital.

A police officer attempted to stop a vehicle that was possibly connected to the crimes. The vehicle stopped and two children got out with their hands up. The vehicle took off. The police gave chase. The vehicle stopped again and was found to contain the body of the 35-year-old woman driver who had shot herself. Narcotics were reportedly found in the vehicle.

The killer was a habitual criminal with numerous felony convictions and a rap sheet 25 pages long. He had been released from prison two months before the serial killings.
