New Bedford, Massachusetts, July 1 -- All of the following is allegedly, reportedly, suspected, etc., except that the victim is dead:

Two teenage couples had a long-running feud that culminated in an arranged fight between the women Wednesday evening.

As one couple arrived at the scene, the other man emerged from concealment and started shooting, firing nine shots. He killed the 18-year-old woman and injured the 17-year-old man. The deceased woman is survived by a 15-month-old son.

Erick Cournoyer, 17, is charged with murder and other offenses and is being held without bail until July 10.

Here is an underage twerp who cannot legally acquire or possess a firearm or ammunition, in a state where it is notoriously difficult for anyone to obtain a pistol permit.

Must not have been aware of the law.

By the way, is there any act of "cold blooded murder" that isn't sensless?

Sure. If someone has offended you in a way that is beyond the reach of the law, it makes sense to murder that person. I'm not saying that it is morally right, just that it is rational.

It also makes sense in that case to avoid getting caught, not to do it in front of witnesses who can identify you in a situation where the cops are going to arrive in seconds.

An example of what I am talking about is the case (which I don't remember the details of) where a sex offender got a very light sentence, and the victim's mother shot him.

Didn't she do that on the steps of the courthouse? She went to prison for a few years, but is out now. I think.

I don't remember, can't find it on the internets; but here's another one:

Spain, 2005: Man rapes 12-year-old, goes to prison, 7 years later gets out on three-day-pass, taunts mother of victim. She gets a bottle of gasoline and sets him on fire, giving him a preview of what he is about to experience for the rest of eternity.

That wasn't how I remembered it. That family had "issues."

We could be remembering two different events.

That would, by definition, not be cold blooded, mom reacted in passion, as well as killing someone that has offended you who is beyond the reach of the law.

I don't think so. People who arm themselves in advance commit premeditated murder. I doubt the Spanish woman routinely carried a bottle of gasoline in her purse.

Sudden passion involves killing with whatever is at hand. It could be a knife or gun, if the killer normally has those things handy. It could be bare hands, a fireplace poker, or a chair.

I'm not so sure. It doesn't necessarily have to be "sudden" passion. In the case of a parent going after someone that has harmed their child, I think there can be some premeditation and still be "in cold blood." Definitely! I think anyone with children has thought about doing something like this if someone were to harm their child. The parent/child bond is so incredible that anything is possible. Even from a normally calm rational person.

Premeditation usually implies cold blooded murder. It's the opposite of acting in the heat of the moment.

It's illegal but sometimes street justice is the only justice available to victims and their loved ones.

There you go. Been thinking about it and think this is correct. The more premeditation, the more "cold blooded" it may be. If someone were to act out of passion and in the heat of a moment there would likely be more remorse afterward. Most people get through those initial impulses and decide NOT to go through with it. It's not right or worth it or whatever. I believe most people will do the right thing when it comes down to it.

Unfortunately, some have a warped sense of what is right and wrong.
