OK, so I have managed to wind up agreeing to take my wife to New York for her birthday (December), probably for a couple of days.
Is there any legal way for me to carry in NYC?

Not unless you're Michael Bloomberg's nephew or you can become a federal agent by December.
[ETA]: It looks like pepper spray is legal. Read the restrictions on handguns and realize how good we really have it:

I used to live in the state and even with my NY CHL I was restricted from entering NYC with a handgun. Very tough laws there even with a CHL. I had to declare my use as hunting. If you declared self defense it would be denied.
Be very careful in NYC. I wouldn't go there unless I was with a local.

Unfortunately, at least some "attractions" will confiscate pepperspray if they find it. The Empire State Building has an elaborate looking screening area, as does the Statue of Liberty (where the X-ray found my Fox OC

). So take spares, like I did.

Also a substantial cane is convenient.

Buy your wife a DVD of "Escape from New York" and take her to the hill country. Scenery is better, people are friendlier, and you won't get arrested for carrying a concealed firearm (if you have the appropriate license of course). To top it off, you could sweeten the deal by buying her a nice new 1911 and still save some money.
Just kidding of course, but it does sound like a better deal to me.

Notwithstanding CHL/Self-Protection issues, NYC is a fabulous place to visit. There are many fun things to see and do. It is the city that never sleeps. Watch your back and bring plenty of money.

Realistically speaking, a person minding his honest business has no more chance of becoming a crime victim in New York than any other American city. Manhattan south of 110th street has been cleaned up pretty well in the past 20 years. I don't know about the other boroughs, but if you're visiting someone who lives there, they will know.
Don't look like you just fell off the turnip wagon, flash a Rolex, etc., and you'll be fine.
Nearly all the violence that you see in the news is between drug gangs and people who have the misfortune to live in the neighborhoods where they are active. It's the same in Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, etc.

My wife and I are going in to NYC in October. If your planning to go to the Statue of Liberty and do the crown tour (re-opened July 4) get your tickets NOW, they are going fast. See
http://www.statuecruises.com.
I hope to have my CHL by then, but sadly, no carry in NYC.

I climbed the Statue of Liberty around 1975. It was half an hour of standing on a steep, narrow spiral staircase with a stranger's butt in my face, for the opportunity to look out the windows at the ocean.
I wouldn't do it again.
If you have a car, I recommend crossing the Verrazano Narrows Bridge when traffic is light.

If you have a car, I recommend NOT driving it in NYC. Quicker to walk, and parking's expensive, if you can find it at all.
