1798 - Congress officially re-established the U.S. Marine Corps. The Corps had first been organized in 1775 during the Revolutionary War.
1804 - Vice President Aaron Burr shot Alexander Hamilton in a duel, causing Hamilton's death the next day. Burr was charged with murder but never found guilty.
1955 - The first class of the U.S. Air Force Academy was sworn in, in Colorado Springs.
1979 - The abandoned Skylab space station burned up in the atmosphere.
ISTR there was a fair amount of hysteria about it crashing somewhere.
1995 - The United States normalized relations with Vietnam.
