Chaotic scenes erupted in South Korea's parliament as politicians introduced a bill on media reform.

The session descended into a mass brawl as politicians from both sides pushed and wrestled each other while some tried to jump the Speaker's podium.

The bill was finally passed by the Deputy Speaker after the Speaker was blocked from entering the room.

What they don't mention is that the process of storming the podium with as many bodies as possible in an attempt to take it over actually has a proper name in S.Korea...

It apparently isn't unusual for the Koreans to get into it over their politics. I think American legislative sessions ought to involve more of this. Might make CSPAN a tad more interesting. :boxing

I think the US federal legislature had some fights in the past -- I recall somebody caned someone else, who was seriously hurt. I believe he later died, if not directly from the caning, at least it didn't help. And wasn't there a duel? (that was Executive Branch I believe, now that I think about it).

In 1856, U.S. Representative Preston Brooks caned Senator Charles Sumner in a dispute that involved the contentious issue of slavery in the Kansas territory and Sen. Sumner having insulted one of Rep. Brooks's relatives.

Said insult is worth quoting, as the art of insults has become so degraded:
[Sumner] characterized Douglas* to his face as a "noise-some, squat, and nameless animal... not a proper model for an American senator." Andrew Butler, who was not present, received more elaborate treatment. Mocking the South Carolina senator's stance as a man of chivalry, the Massachusetts senator charged him with taking "a mistress... who, though ugly to others, is always lovely to him; though polluted in the sight of the world, is chaste in his sight—I mean," added Sumner, "the harlot, Slavery."

Brooks beat Sumner and left him seriously injured.

This kind of thing has been very rare in American history. It's not uncommon in the parliaments of east Asian countries, including Japan and Taiwan.

Vice President Aaron Burr shot and killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804. At the time, dueling was legal in New Jersey, which the participants chose as a site for that reason.
