Lathrop, Callifornia (east of Oakland), this date -- A a "multi-agency task force" was searching for a parolee when a dog assigned to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department bit a U.S. Marshall. The marshall reportedly shot the dog with fatal results.

seems a little harsh to me .
can't a well trained dog be allowed to make one mistake without paying the ultimate price ?

its not like it was a pit bull randomly attacking a child .

Sounds like proper defense of life and limb to me. I don't think many people would just sit back and take it from such dogs if they had the means to stop such an attack. Police, like the rest of us are responsible for keeping their animals under control. THe dogs, like police officers usually pay the price for lack of training, poor policy, or bad command decisions.

As we have seen if a dog attacks a police officer something or someone is is going to be shot. Sometimes its a miniture dachshund, sometimes its a its an NYC police officer.

I'm not sure I would let a dog chew on me for any length of time either. Sorry, but that stuff hurts!!!!

good point ..
however , the impression i got from reading the story , was that the dog bit the officer .(perhaps accidentally)
and was not viciously attacking , which leads me to believe it was more of an accidental thing rather than a case of an animal going bad .

maybe he was having a bad day...
maybe the dog opened his 401K statement and saw how much of his retirement has been lost .

Imagine if it was a normal citizen who shot the police dog.

A non-LEO who shot a police dog would be lucky to live through the next three seconds, and undoubtedly would do jail time.

The way I read this, the marshal and another officer were struggling with a suspect who was resisting arrest. The K9 team rolled up, and the dog bit the marshal.

It sounds to me like a reflexive reaction. Maybe the marshal thought the suspect's "pit bull" was attacking him.

Also note that the dog had bitten a bystander several years ago.
