1619 - The first representative assembly in North America convened in Jamestown, Virginia.
1729 - The City of Baltimore was founded.
1942 - President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill creating the women's naval auxiliary, the WAVES.
1956 - President Eisenhower signed legislation placing the motto "In God We Trust" on coins.
1965 - President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law.
1971 - Apollo 15 astronauts David R. Scott and James B. Irwin landed on the moon.
1975 - Jimmy Hoffa, former president of the corrupt (at the time) Teamsters union, disappeared. His body was never found. No credible account of his disappearance has ever been offered. It was the most successful conspiracy of the 20th century.
