This morning I attended an IDPA familiarization class instructed by our very own SRVA. What a great experience! His teaching style is easy and laid back (low threat) while still maintaining complete and safe control of the shooters and the range.

He started the day with instruction on the 4 basic safety rules, then gave several examples of some of the most common safety violations. It was extremely informative and applicable for every level of shooter.

He then discussed the shooting grip, and talked about what was considered effective in relation to the era in which it was used. He talked about his own experience with "evolving" his grip. One thing struck home with me through this period of instruction: Don't be so concrete in your belief that the "way we've always done it" is the best way forever. Be forward-thinking and flexible enough to try new techniques. It just might surprise you! Until today, I was a diehard "modified Weaver" guy. I will be working to change that to be more in line with what was taught today; a more modern "competitive style" grip.

The capstone instruction for the class (at least in my mind) was the scenario shooting. What a rush!! Here's the course of fire:

At the buzzer, from the holstered position, draw and engage three targets, two shots each while on the move BACKWARDS. Move to the barricade two steps to your right and engage three targets, two shots each around the right hand side of the barricade with a reload for your last shot!

My time was respectable I suppose, but after watching SRVA demonstrate the scenario, I see there is MUCH work to do! The adrenaline is pumping just sitting here writing this! It was the most informative and fun time I have had while shooting in a LONG while! I can't wait to do it again!!

Thanks so much SRVA for your time and instruction! You've re-awakened an excitement in me for the sport I love!
