1790 - The first U.S. census was completed, as mandated by the Constitution. The population was fewer than 4 million.
1852 - The first black Methodist church was established in San Francisco.
1876 - Colorado became the 38th state.
1944 - The Warsaw Uprising began. Polish resistance forces fought the Nazis for 63 days, taking about 1:1 casaulties. The freedom fighters ultimately surrendered.
1966 - Charles Whitman killed his wife during the night. At 11:30 a.m. he ascended the clock tower on the UT campus and shot and killed 14 people and injured 32 more.
1988 - Rush Limbaugh's nationally syndicated radio talk show began.
