1790 - The Revenue Cutter Service, the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, was commissioned.

1892 - Lizzie Borden allegedly murdered her father and step-mother in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was acquitted at trial because of lack of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

1944 - Anne Frank and most of her family were arrested in Amsterdam and subsequently killed.

1987 - The Federal Communications Commission rescinded the Fairness Doctrine, opening the way for undiluted political broadcasting.

and thereby saved AM radio which had been going down the drain for several years.

The so-called "Fairness Doctrine" was anything but. It is astonishing how often these government regs/programs come up with names that sound like apply Pie and Motherhood but are anything but. The Department of Education! Environmental Protection Agency! Homeland Security! Need I say more?

Well, Department of Justice, I guess.

This has been going on for a long time, though I think it got started around the time of WW II. George Orwell recognized it in 1948 (when he wrote the book 1984).

In the U.S.: Department of War -> Department of Defense
Department of Foreign Affairs -> Department of State
Federal Security Agency -> Department of Health, Education, and Welfare -> Department of Health and Human Services + Department of Education

There many more examples among the lower-level agencies, like BATFE, ICE, etc.

I can't help adding what what used to be called the Department of Prisons in many states became the Department of Corrections, but not a whole lot of correction occurs.

You also see it with these lobbying and fund-raising organizations that have names Citizens for <something> or Americans for <something>, where <something> is something like progress, a safe environment, clean energy, safer kids, etc.
