I'm all for kids learning early. I don't have any myself so I have no idea to gauge when the right age is, but even at six I wouldn't expect to see a kid doing this. The shells getting ejected look much bigger than a .22 and I find it hard to believe a six year old could handle a .40 or .45. Maybe he's shooting blanks?

He's definitely not shooting blanks. I heard at least one "plink" when he hit a target.

That's a 1911 pistol so I'd guess 45acp.

I also noticed he was shooting right handed but pulling the trigger with his left hand's finger. I guess his hands are too small to hold it and pull the trigger with the right hand (this is the exact problem my 3 year old son has). He's also badly flinching - you can see at the end there when he doesn't know he's out of ammo, he fires one last shot and you can see the pistol badly flinch when he fires. He needs to be taught the surprise break with several practice sessions that involve randomly placed dummy rounds.

I'd say he has some more work to do.

It would have to be light-loaded .45 or similar; the hulls look bigger than 9mm, but while I could believe a 6 year old handling the gun that well, I can't imagine him having the strength to rack the slide so casually against a full-power recoil spring.

The slide doesn't lock back when he's empty. He has to drop the magazine, put in a new one, and rack the slide, so it definitely looks like he's using light loads.

I only started my safety classes at age 6. It was years before I got to handle anything bigger then a Red Ryder Daisy.

My dad had me doing cowboy shooting competitions when I was 11. We used the same .357 and .45 Vaqueros, lever action .38, and a 12 gauge side by side. He handloaded all my ammo very light for me. The only difficulty I had was getting my hands around those massive Vaqueros.

Could be a 1911 with a 22 conversion. A friend of ours started his daughter out with a 1911 with a 22 conversion. She started shooting IDPA with us when she was 8. I don't know how old she was when he started her shooting.

Ejected brass & recoil is definately evidence of larger caliber than .22. I vote for a loaded down .38super.

No looks at a target & hits in the "A" zone but the kid can shoot on my team any time he wants too.

I saw that video a week or so ago. That is awesome and inspiration for me when I decide to have children. Props to the dad for getting his kid interested early.

My grandson is going to be so-o-o-o jealous. I was thinking of buying him a Cricket next year. Now it looks like it'll be "Gran-dad, can I borrow the 45!"
