My employer has just announced that they will be conducting random security searches of people's vehicles and personal belongings. Is this legal? No speculation, facts only, please.

i thought this was America !

Where? On vehicles entering or leaving the company property, yes legal. Outside company property, no way.

Assuming they're not a government agency, they have the right to set any terms of employment they wish. If that means you are required to dress up in a chicken suit, then so be it. You can always quit.

You can refuse to be searched, and they can fire you. It IS America. Too bad the legislature didn't pass the safe workers act this last session, then you would be protected from these actions while legally carrying a weapon in your vehicle.

During the course of that search can they compel you to open your lockbox containing your weapon?

As terms of employment they can. You can refuse, and they can fire you.

We need to work for the safe worker act in the next session so they can't fire you for carrying a firearm in your locked vehicle while on their property. The TSRA fought hard for this one, but our representatives didn't think it was important enough this session to pass.

Why are they searching? What are they looking for? Does your cpmpany have an employee theft problem? Drugs? I doubt that they are going to all that expense to look for firearms.

Are they using dogs? If not, just get ingenioius and hide the thing where it won't be found. Pull your front seat out and rig something up where it can be well hidden.

Of course that's just me hating to be told what to do by fools.

Someone on here had the idea of storing it in a records lock-box labeled "Medical Records" this way it is a privacy issue. Not sure if that would work or not.

My employer is a defense contractor, if that makes any difference.

My employer has the same policy, but to my knowledge has not searched one vehicle ever. They even prohibit us from having a firearm in our car when traveling if it is work related and from keeing one in our car at other sites where the parking is in public parking lots. At our main facility the parking lot is private property. I hate it, but I REALLY like my job and in my profession I'm really not going to find it any better until the parking lot bill gets passed.

Enough stunts like this is how employers end up getting to deal with unions.

Don't know the situation, but could OP just park on a public street/lot and walk to work? What about a park-n-ride type situation with a city bus?

Of course, doing any of the above still puts the OP in an unprotected position of walking or bussing to work without concealed handgun.

Being a defense contractor, could this "search" be related to the business in some way? Searching for stolen proprietary company data? Or perhaps a security-related search because some political and/or military big wigs will be visiting the site?
